Ifuta Omugwo in Mgbidi: A Celebration of New Life
Ifuta Omugwo is known in Mgbidi town as the date/day a woman who delivered a new born baby comes out from her traditional confinement after being indoors for seven Igbo weeks (Ọnwa), counting -Eke, Orie, Afọ, and Nkwọ seven times, she emerges to celebrate with family, friends, and the wider community.
The Seven Weeks of Confinement
During these seven Igbo weeks, the mother remains indoors to rest, bond with her baby, and recover from childbirth. On the appointed day of Ifuta Omugwo, she steps outside in a colourful wrapper and head tie, greeted by ululations, drums, and the scent of freshly cooked yam. This day is normally a day of celebration. Infant children perform their own traditional activities by getting involved in what is called Awanjeri.
Awanjeri: The Children’s Hunt
As part of the festivities, the community’s children take part in Awanjeri, a traditional “hunt” for crickets, play-mantises, grasshoppers, and other insects. They roam the compound and nearby fields, returning with their “catch” to the rhythm of songs such as:
Call: Kpukpu Una oo.
Response: Na oh na oh.
Call: Anyi anaba oh,
Response: Na oh na oh.
Call: Onye pa okuku
Response: Papa uka-eje oh.
Once home, they are given two or three tubers of yam to cook the insects they caught, turning their prize into a shared snack.
Naming Ceremony PROPER
When the meal is ready, children and elders gather to name the newborn. One by one, each child approaches the mother, who sprinkles white powder on their hand before they gently blow it across the baby’s forehead. Traditional chants accompany the ritual:
Ihe Nnegi ziri go jeya, Ihe nnagi ziri gi je ya
Nnegi kobakwagi w, ere mkpume gbawaa ite mmiri ya.
Nnagi kpobakwagi w, ere mkpume gbawaa ite mmiri ya.
Feast and Fellowship
The "Mbeju" play, a mbeju -a piece of breakable mud pot and a small mud pot will be provided. Where part of the cooked yam and insects will be dished into, the small mud pot is called "ochiri" in Mgbidi dialect. Now, the real deal. The strongest child among them will break the mbeju alongside the ochiri while others will chase him with leaves in their hand to flog him if they are able to catch up with him.
As evening falls, elders convene in the celebrant’s compound. Their wives serve a communal dish of vegetable yam, symbolizing fertility, health, and unity. Everyone eats and drinks palm wine to their satisfaction. The celebrant serves every guest with fufu known as "egbolo" in Mgbidi, with better native offor or achi soup.
Stories of the newborn’s ancestors are recounted, and blessings are offered for the child’s future. When night sets in everyone will gradually starts disengaging from the compound of the celebrant.
Through Ifuta Omugwo, Mgbidi reaffirms its values of family, tradition, and communal support, welcoming each new life with song, ceremony, and shared abundance.
